On 21 November 2019, Algorand announced a protocol upgrade that introduces Algorand Standard Assets, Atomic Transfers, and Algorand Smart Contracts to the Algorand network. The full announcement release from Algorand can be found here. Please find our blog post here.
The vote for the protocol upgrade will occur on-chain. If the number of votes for the protocol upgrade exceeds the 9,000 voting threshold, then the protocol upgrade is approved and will take effect after 10,000 blocks from the end of the voting period. The protocol upgrade may be proposed in perpetuity.
